Why do we cling to our memories of the past?

Why is it so difficult for us to let go of painful and traumatic experiences? Situations that have caused suffering.

Well it’s, because of our need for certainty, many of us get caught in the past.

Trauma is defined as:

  1. deeply distressing or disturbing experience.”a personal trauma like the death of a child”
  2. physical injury “rupture of the diaphragm caused by blunt trauma”

I believe trauma can be the time your parents forgot to pick you up from school, the sudden loss of a job, the ghosting of a guy you really like. THESE ARE ALL TRAUMA. All these events cause distress in the mind and in the body.

Letting go of the past also entails taking a risk and venturing into the unknown. It requires the bravery to let go of what is familiar – even if it is negative – and the vulnerability to accept and learn from what is ahead.

Moving on from the past gets increasingly difficult when there is still emotion attached to a memory.
